Patients aged 40-74 with no pre-existing conditions can book a general health check once every five years. This will help to identify and prevent problems such as high blood pressure, kidney problems, diabetes, stroke, heart disease and dementia.
All Services
Minor Surgery
Drs Batty, Pointon and Stockley undertake minor surgical procedures. These need to be arranged with the GPs, who will only perform procedures where they are within the criteria set by the local commissioning board.
Diabetes Clinics
We run weekly GP-led diabetic clinics. These are held at 3 separate times during the week with Drs Stockley, Bradley-Wood, Dodd and Dr Pointon with nursing support, undertaking annual assessments of patients’ diabetes. We also have nurse-led clinics during the week for interim checks.
We provide a comprehensive package of support to new diabetic patients. For suitable patients, we can also start insulin without referral to the hospital clinics.
Please note, if you are sent an appointment for your annual diabetic review and the date and time are not convenient for you, please telephone one of our secretaries to rearrange a more suitable appointment.
Respiratory Clinics
We have nurses with additional training in the management of asthma. Adults and children with asthma should be reviewed yearly. If you have asthma and are using a blue inhaler on a daily basis, please make an appointment for an asthma review.
Newly diagnosed patients do require longer appointment times, so please ensure you highlight this if relevant. We are also interested in helping patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) in a similar way. Treatments for COPD can differ from asthma, but we run the clinics for people with either problem.
Baby Checks
All children are offered an initial check at 8 weeks by Drs Benson or Czajkowski. It is helpful if you can remember to bring your child’s red book in order that it can be completed.
Immunisations and Vaccinations
Influenza Immunisations
Each year, we run a comprehensive campaign of influenza immunisations. We aim to complete as many patients as we can early in the campaign to give patients maximum protection. Starting at the end of September each year, we give approximately 5,000 injections.
The groups we target are:
- Patients aged 65 years and over
- People with Ischaemic Heart Disease, Diabetes
- People with Chronic Liver or Kidney disease
- People with Asthma/Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
- Patients living in nursing or residential homes
- In addition, patients whose immunity is reduced such as those having chemotherapy or on high dose of steroids and other drugs.
At the same time as the ‘Flu injections’ we also offer pneumococcal vaccinations to those at risk. For most people this is a single injection and is now offered routinely to everyone aged 65 years and above.
Pneumococcal Immunisations
We offer pneumococcal immunisations to patients at risk. In particular, these are people aged 65 years or more or those who:
- Have Ischaemic Heart Disease
- Have Diabetes Mellitus
- Have Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease or severe Asthma
- Have Chronic Liver Disease
- Have Chronic Kidney Disease
- Are Immunosuppressed
- Have had their spleen removed
For most of these patients, a single injection is adequate. However, certain people do require boosters.
Travel Related Immunisations
For further information on the travel vaccines you may require for travel please follow the following links:
We recommend contacting us or a travel clinic at least 8 weeks before you travel to discuss your vaccination needs.
We offer the travel related vaccinations which are free on the NHS, if you wish to book a travel risk assessment for the vaccines available from the NHS, please contact us on 01757 702561 to book a telephone appointment with a nurse. For this appointment you will need to have to hand your travel itinerary including date and destinations.
Following on from this appointment, if you need any vaccinations which are available free on the NHS, a face to face appointment will be arranged and you will be supplied with information on which vaccinations you need to consider obtaining via a private travel vaccination clinic, the travel clinic will be able to inform you of the costs of these vaccinations.
If you prefer, you can choose to book an appointment direct with the travel vaccination clinic for them to go through the vaccinations you need. If the travel clinic conclude you do not need any vaccinations based on your vaccination history and travel itinerary, we expect there would be a charge for their consultation. Some patients find it more convenient to obtain all their vaccinations with a travel clinic accepting that the ones usually free on the NHS are chargeable if obtained via the clinic.
You can find a Masta Travel Clinic via: https://www.masta-travel-health.com/FindAClinic
If you obtain any vaccinations at a travel health clinic, please ensure you send a copy of the vaccination record given to you so that we can update your medical record, we are unlikely to receive these direct from the travel clinic and would like to ensure your medical record vaccination history is up to date.
Family Planning and Gynae Services
We provide a full contraceptive service in normal surgery hours. For women wishing to have a contraceptive implant fitted or an IUD/IUS (Mirena) fitted, it is important to have an initial appointment with Drs Batty, Benson or Bradley-Wood who specialise in the fitting of implant and IUD/IUS (Mirena).
Emergency contraception is available from the Urgent Treatment Centre at Selby War Memorial Hospital or the nurses as well as the doctors at the surgery. It is important to be seen as soon as possible and certainly within 72 hours of any potential contraceptive failure or omission. This service is also available from your local pharmacy.
