Appointments at Posterngate Surgery

We understand it can be confusing to work out who you need to book an appointment with for certain problems. We have produced a leaflet for patients to give some idea of who to book in with to make things a bit easier. You can find this leaflet under 'Appointments' at the top of the page, and then in the tab 'Who to book with'.

YOUR VIEWS ARE IMPORTANT

We want to encourage patients to give their views about how the practice is doing. If you are interested in finding out more information, please click on the 'Sign up for our Patient Group' link below.

If you would like to become a member of the Patient Participation Group, please contact the Surgery for more information.

pregnantAnte-Natal Care

Ante-Natal care is now led by our team of Midwives, who work in close co-operation with the GPs. We advise women to try to see one of the midwives at around 8 weeks of pregnancy, for initial advice. We advise all women who are trying to conceive, and until they are 12 weeks pregnant, to take Folic Acid 400 microgrammes daily (available from any Pharmacy).

During pregnancy, most care is provided at the surgery, but we follow the latest guidelines from York District Hospital for women’s health in pregnancy. Most women are booked to have their baby in York District Hospital, but we can make arrangements easily with other hospitals, such as Pontefract or one of the Leeds Hospitals.

Family Planning and Contraceptive Services

We provide a full contraceptive service in normal surgery hours. For women wishing to have a contraceptive implant fitted, it is important to have an initial appointment with Drs Batty, Benson, Bradley-Wood or Czajkowski who specialise in the fitting of implants.

For women wishing to have an IUD / IUS (Mirena) fitted, it is important to have an initial appointment with Drs Batty, Benson or Bradley-Wood who specialise in the fitting of IUD / IUS (Mirena).

Emergency contraception is available from the nurses as well as the doctors, and it is important to be seen as soon as possible and certainly within 72 hours of any potential contraceptive failure or omission. This service is also available from the Minor Injuries unit at Selby War Memorial Hospital or from your local pharmacy (although there maybe a charge).

Cervical Smears

These important checks facilitate early detection of cancer of the cervix. All female patients between the ages of 25 and 49 should be tested every three years until the age of 50 and then every 5 years until the age of 65 years. More regular tests may be needed if abnormalities have been found.

On occasion, younger patients may also be recommended for testing, but women aged less than 25 years do not need routine cervical screening. Appointments can be made with any of the nurses.

Mammograms

These breast checks are carried out every 3 years, when the mobile service from York is based at Selby War Memorial Hospital, for about 3 months.

babyhelpChild Development Checks

All Children are offered an initial check at 8 weeks by Drs Benson, Czajkowski or Dodd. It is helpful if you can remember to bring your child’s red book in order that it can be completed.

Well Child Clinics

The Health Visiting team run baby weighing clinics at both the South and North Children's centre in Selby. Details below :

Tuesday 1.30-3PM at Selby South Children's Centre

Friday 9-11AM at Selby North Children's Centre

Asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) Clinics

We have two nurses with additional training in the management of asthma. Adults with asthma should be reviewed yearly and children 6 monthly. If you have asthma and are using a blue inhaler on a daily basis, please make an appointment for an asthma review.

Newly diagnosed patients do require longer appointment times, so please ensure you highlight this if relevant.  We are also interested in helping patients with Chronic Obstuctive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) in a similar way. Treatments for COPD can differ from Asthma, but we run the clinics for people with either problem.

British Thoracic Society

Diabetes Clinics

We run weekly GP-led Diabetic clinics. These are held at 3 separate times during the week with Drs Reid, Stockley, Bradley-Wood and Dodd with Nursing support, undertaking annual assessments of patients’ diabetes.   We also have Nurse-led clinics during the week for interim checks.  Retinal photographs are taken at the surgery by the team from York Hospital Trust, on an annual basis for most people with Diabetes.

We provide a comprehensive package of support to new diabetic patients. For suitable patients, we can also start Insulin without referral to the hospital clinics.

Please note, if you are sent an appointment for your annual diabetic review and the date and time are not convenient for you, please telephone one of our secretaries to rearrange a more suitable appointment.  Please do not cancel and rebook your own appointment using the Internet.

Minor Surgery

Several of our doctors undertake some minor surgical procedures, such as joint injections and removal of some skin lesions.

NB: the range of surgical procedures GPs are now allowed to perform has been significantly reduced by the CCG (clinical commissioning group) since 1st September 2010.  Unfortunately this means that our GPs are not able to remove as wide a variety of skin lesions as they were able to prior to this date.

Skin lesions that meet the CCG criteria are treated on our Minor Surgery Operating on Wednesday afternoons.

Appointments for the Minor Surgery lists can only be agreed after the patient has been seen by a GP. GPs will only perform procedures they feel are suitable.  More complicated problems may be referred to Specialists for treatment.

Lesions that do not meet the PCT criteria may result in patients being advised to consult a private doctor/organisation.

bpcheckIschaemic Heart Disease Clinics

With more patients having Ischaemic Heart Disease (Angina or past Heart Attack), we offer Nurse-led clinics, to ensure patients are having the optimum advice and health checks.

In these clinics we concentrate on patients who have not had any sort of check-up related to their IHD in the recent past. We have clear advice on what constitutes best practice for most patients and we wish to ensure our patients receive it.

Over 75 year checks

We offer check-ups to people over 75 years, concentrating on patients who have not been seen by the Practice for some time. We ask patients to come to the surgery, if possible, but are quite happy to arrange home visits for these checks if necessary.  If you would like a check-up, please contact the surgery to arrange a suitable time.

Drug Misuse

A drug counsellor attends the surgery weekly. We make referrals to the service, which is linked to the local North Yorkshire Horizons drug clinic.  We do not prescribe any drugs for people misusing opiates, until they have attended the counsellor, and we work very closely with the counsellor.  If misusers do not attend appointments, we will refuse to prescribe for them, until they have made contact with the drug misuse service.

Health Promotion

All of our nurses can give advice on health and lifestyle problems. They can check blood pressure, advise about alcohol intake, diet and exercise. We advise that every adult should have a Blood Pressure check at least every 5 years.

Smoking Cessation

The Practice encourages patients to stop smoking. We no longer run smoking cessation clinics.  It is advised that patients who want help to quit smoking receive professional support (see link below), as well as any necessary prescribed medication.
